Auditor Shad White is demanding the former NFL QB repay nearly $730,000 that was supposed to help some of the poorest people in the state.
Favre is not facing criminal charges in the Mississippi welfare scandal but he is among people the state is suing to try to recover misspent money.
“No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me,” Favre said.

Milwaukee radio station WKTI also announced that it has suspended Favre’s weekly Green Bay Packers recap program on the station.
Favre's attorney denied that the Hall of Fame quarterback knew funding for a volleyball center was coming from welfare money.
The Hall of Fame quarterback and others were accused of "squandering" money from an anti-poverty program.
The NFL Hall of Fame quarterback paid back $500,000 on Wednesday and will repay the other $600,000 in installments over the next few months.
