Wall Street Journal Closes Boston Bureau

The Wall Street Journal — the nation's new #1 newspaper (and the only national newspaper to gain circulation this year) — has just announced plans to close its Boston bureau.

In an memo to the paper's staff, editor Robert Thomson said that the Boston bureau was informed it would be closing Thursday morning. Thomson added that "an investigative function will remain in Boston, but the core reporting team will be disbanded, though all nine reporters affected will certainly be able to apply for openings elsewhere on the paper."

Thomson said it is now time to "think the unthinkable," but that there are no plans to close any other domestic or international bureaus.
