The World Lights Up Purple For Prince

His trademark color washes over bridges, bleacher seats and city hall.

It's raining purple for Prince.

Following news of the music icon's death on Thursday, music venues, landmarks and other locations honored the "Purple Rain" singer by lighting up in his trademark color and playing his music for mourning fans.

The Apollo Theater

On the day the artist died, the marquee of New York City's Apollo Theater, where Prince played several shows during his career, was changed to read "In honor of the beautiful one" -- a reference to his song "The Beautiful Ones" -- and "Nothing compares 2 u." The iconic Harlem venue also played Prince's music in the afternoon, NBC New York reported.
Paisley Park

Fans decorated the fence outside Prince's Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minnesota, with purple flowers upon hearing news of his death.
First Avenue
Fans flocked to First Avenue, the Minneapolis nightclub that shot to fame after Prince filmed much of his "Purple Rain" movie there, and left flowers underneath his star outside the club. About 50 to 60 mourners were seen there on Thursday afternoon, The Associated Press reported. The club also announced that it would hold an all-night dance party honoring Prince on Thursday night.
Target Field
The stadium of Prince's hometown baseball team, the Minnesota Twins, lit up purple in his honor. His music has long been embedded in the team's rituals. When Target Field opened in 2010, the ballpark started blasting Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" after ever home run. It's also tradition for veteran players to make sure rookies know all the lyrics to Prince's "Little Red Corvette,"MLB.com said.
The New Yorker
The New Yorker's cover next week will be a tribute to Prince's "Purple Rain."
WCCO
The CBS Minnesota affiliate WCCO revealed a sparkling, purple sign Thursday in honor of the fallen star.
Lowry Avenue Bridge
The Lowry Avenue Bridge is one of several Minneapolis structures to announce they would light up purple for Prince on Thursday night.
The I-35W Bridge
The I-35W Bridge will also change color.
The Orlando Eye
The 400-foot-tall Orlando, Florida, ride plans to light up purple Thursday night for Prince.
BuzzFeed
BuzzFeed adjusted the lights in every hallway of its headquarters to honor Prince, the site's executive culture editor tweeted.
