Colorado Medical Marijuana Grow Operations Under Fire After Children Injured (VIDEO)

Medical Marijuana, always a hot topic in Colorado, came under fire over the weekend when authorities released details of two separate incidents in which children were injured in houses where medical marijuana was being grown.

In one case, authorities believe a 10-month-old boy in Commerce City overdosed on THC after he grabbed and ate a handful of marijuana edibles from a bin in his parents' shed. The boy is expected to fully recover.

In another case, an eleven year-old boy in Thornton accidentally shot himself in the foot with a 22-caliber handgun. The North Metro Task Force, a Denver-area drug task force, believes that the boy was left alone at the house with a loaded gun to protect the family's grow operation. The boy's father will likely be arrested.

Jerry peters of the North Metro Task Force told Westword he sees the incidents as part of a growign trend involving marijuana.

"The environment is dangerous, with all the pesticides and so forth," Peters said. "And they're compounding it by putting up booby traps, arming themselves, arming their children to guard these places. It's ridiculous."

In both cases, the parents involved claimed to be legal marijuana caregivers, but neither could provide documentation.
