Despite knocking The Hunger Games from the number one spot at the box office last month, Think Like A Man may not have the opportunity to capitalize off of its success internationally.
According to various sites the film has been reportedly banned in France due to a lack of diversity in the cast. For Global Voices writer Fabienne Flessel, the news doesn’t come as a shock as she claims that the French society “acts” hypocritical when it comes to the release of films by black producers.
“Tyler Perry's movies are never scheduled in any French movie theaters or are only released in DVDs, even though he has been used to leading the US box-office, as with ‘Why did I get Married' and ‘For Colored Girls’," she wrote on the site. “The French society acts hypocritically, when it refuses to show movies from black producers who earn millions from conveying a positive message to the African diaspora through their films.”
Since its April 20 release, the Tim Story directed flick, which is inspired by Steve Harvey’s New York Times bestseller, Act Like A Lady Think Like A Man, has grossed close to $87 million with $746,902 coming from the South Africa region, according to Box Office Mojo.
While rumors continue to swirl around whether or not the film was actually banned from France a rep for Sony revealed to News One that the film “was never planned for release in France” and that it is currently being considered for release in other foreign regions.
