An app which allows women to rate men like they would restaurants just got a lot less creepy.
When Lulu was launched in early 2013, women could anonymously write a Lulu review for anyone listed as "male" on their Facebook profile, tagging their virtues (#BelievesInLove, #LifeOfTheParty) and vices (#RudeToWaiters, #HygienicallyChallenged) for any other users to see. Several of the app's critics, including Amanda Hess at Slate, were troubled the fact that men had no say over whether their profile would appear on the app. "Any woman who's been cat-called by a stranger on the street knows this: Unwelcomed sexual commentary isn't a compliment, it's harassment. If Lulu is really a boon for men, then let willing parties create their own profiles," Hess wrote.
Luckily, the team at Lulu have made a few changes.
The app's makers have quietly shifted the service to an "opt-in" rather than "opt-out" model. According to the Lulu FAQ, men who don't want to be featured on the app no longer need to contact the Lulu team or access the app to have their profile removed -- because they won't be listed on the app in the first place.
"Some guys don't want to be on Lulu, and we respect that. We've decided to be the better woman and only have guys on Lulu who are open to feedback," a Lulu spokesperson told Jezebel.
We love that this company listened to users' and critic's concerns and made the change -- and it'll certainly be interesting to see what kinds of men are opened to being reviewed, Yelp-style.
