Hulking Buffalo Sabres enforcer John Scott was assessed a game misconduct and subsequently ejected for delivering a vicious late hit on Bruins forward Loui Eriksson on Wednesday during the third period.

Scott, a 6'8" 260-pound defenseman, appeared to strike Eriksson in the jaw with an elbow after the winger had already dumped the puck out of the neutral zone. Eriksson needed to be helped off the ice by his teammates after the blow.

In addition to the game misconduct penalty, Scott received a 5-minute major for fighting Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid after the cheap shot.

“[It was] just reaction on a play like that. You don’t want to see guys get hit like that,” McQuaid said about his encounter with Scott, via the Bruins' official Twitter account.

According to Boston GM Peter Chiarelli, Eriksson was held overnight in Buffalo for "precautionary reasons."

Scott will be scheduled for an in-person hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan in the near future, per TSN.
