Ella Fitzgerald, 'The First Lady Of Song,' Honored With Google Doodle

'The First Lady Of Song' Gets Doodled

There have been plenty of First Ladies, but there's only one First Lady Of Song.

On Thursday, Google celebrated what would have been Ella Fitzgerald's 96th birthday with a celebratory Doodle in her honor.

Known for her soulful voice that could "leap, slide or growl" across three octaves, Fitzgerald worked hard to earn the title of "The Queen of Jazz" through a prolific career. Fitzgerald recorded over 200 albums and 2,000 songs, which totaled 40 million in sales and notched her 13 Grammy wins, working with everyone from Duke Ellington to Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

Additional achievements include the National Medal of Arts in 1987 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. Fitzgerald was also a strong supporter of children's charities throughout her life, establishing the Ella Fitzgerald Child Care Center in Los Angeles in 1977.

It's about time Google paid this tribute. Or as Fitzgerald herself would say...
