Couple Married 60 Years Were Together Until The Very End

New York couple Ed and Floreen Hale got married in 1953, but the road to the altar wasn't an easy one.

Ed had asked Floreen's parents for her hand in marriage, but they refused because she had just been in a terrible car accident and was still recovering.

"I want to be with her for the rest of her life," Ed told her parents at the time, according to NBC affiliate WGRZ . "I will care for her the rest of my life if I have to."

And Ed made good on that promise throughout their 60-year marriage, even when he was struggling with his own health problems. Earlier this month, Ed was hospitalized in Rochester, N.Y. because his kidneys were giving out. At the same time, Floreen was at a hospital in Batavia, N.Y. dealing with a number of illnesses, including congestive heart failure.

As Ed's health continued to worsen, he had one request -- to be reunited with his wife. But his condition was so poor that that the hospital staff worried he wouldn't survive the ambulance ride.

Staff at both hospitals worked together to find a way to get Ed and Floreen back together. Ed was transported to United Memorial Medical Center where he shared a room and held hands with his beloved Floreen until she died on February 7. Thirty-six hours later, Ed died too.

"I think it was so beautiful the way it happened," niece Lisa Giattino said to WGRZ. "It is a true love story."
