The race to Black Rock City is underway.

Registration for Burning Man tickets opened Wednesday, and for those who register, tickets will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis on February 13.

The upcoming large sale follows a "core group" pre-sale. Under the newly introduced system, 10,000 tickets were released to critical contributors such as volunteers, interactive camps, art car projects and performance groups, before they became available to the public.

Another round of "OMG" tickets will become available in August, shortly before the event. These tickets are meant to undermine scalpers and eliminate anxiety for the impacted tickets.

The ticketing changes come in response to last year's controversial lottery system which left some veteran Burning Man participants ticketless.

"Once we sold out, it made us reflect and try to think of a way to meet the needs of our core social infrastructure that we've come to rely on over the years," Burning Man Public Relations Manager Megan Miller told The Huffington Post in January. "This is what we're experimenting with."

Register for Burning Man tickets before February 10 on the Burning Man web site.
