Burge Trial Pushed Back 18 Days As Prosecutors Consider New Torture Cases

A federal judge today delayed the trial of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge by more than two weeks after prosecutors disclosed they want the jury to hear about three more questionable interrogations of suspects allegedly carried out by Burge and his men.

Burge is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying about his involvement in torture of criminal suspects in the 1980s. Burge denied any knowledge of the alleged torture in written answers he submitted in 2003 as part of a federal lawsuit.
