Bill De Blasio, Lifelong Red Sox Fan, Promises To Root For Any New York Team

De Blasio A Red Sox Fan

Despite a bid for New York City mayor, candidate and current frontrunner Bill de Blasio admits his baseball loyalties lie up north with the Boston Red Sox.

De Blasio, who was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is in fact a die-hard fan, referring to his dedication to the Sox as a "deep devotion."

He told The New York Times:

The team that I grew up with was constantly the underdog but managed to prevail...Everyone I knew was a Red Sox fan. Living up there in 1967 — the Impossible Dream season — that moment was incredibly compelling. I just naturally gravitated to the team. Nineteen seventy-five was arguably the greatest World Series of all time.

As his opponents jokingly take aim at his Boston allegiances, de Blasio has made sure to note he is "very happy to celebrate any New York sports team."

Even as far back as 2009, Mets fan John Liu, who is also a mayoral hopeful this year, warned, "If I were Bill de Blasio, I wouldn’t publicize that too much."

As for opponent Christine Quinn, she was raised a Mets fan but flip-flopped once she started dating wife Kim Catullo, a noted Yankees fan.
