Alanis Morissette Discusses Her Struggles With Postspartum Depression On 'Chelsea Lately' (VIDEO)

Alanis Morissette Discusses Postpartum Depression

Alanis Morissette opened up about her struggles with postpartum depression during her visit to "Chelsea Lately." Not only did she struggle with the feelings, she also said that she waited much too long to reach out for help.

"It was about a year and four months," Morissette admitted, which shocked Chelsea Handler.

"No wonder you wanted to write an album," she said.

But Morrissette says the album appears to be largely unaffected by her postpartum depression, though she can see some moments here and there. "There’s a song called ‘Numb,’ where I write about recovery."

ABC News asked Morissette why she didn't open up about her postpartum until she set out on this promotional tour for her album, Morissette said, "I didn't feel the need to share." Now, though, she's speaking out in hopes of encouraging other women going through it to reach out for help far sooner than she did.

Alanis Morissette's newest album, "Havoc and Bright Lights" was released Tuesday, August 28, 2012. HuffPost Entertainment wrote that the album shows "a more grown up Morissette," and that much of the music comes not from Morissette's journals -- as "Jagged Little Pill" did -- but rather "from a place of a woman in love."

"Chelsea Lately" airs every weeknight at 11 p.m. ET on E!
