Last year, 3-year-old Addilyn Roberts, who is battling cancer, and her parents fell victim to a charity scam. Now, country singer Gary Allan and a local radio station have come to their rescue.
Back in September, Addie was diagnosed with leukemia. Shortly after, her parents, Angela and Ben of Elizabethtown, Ky., were approached by an old friend named Kyle Nunn who told them he wanted to organize a benefit concert for her, featuring country star Jason Aldean, according to WDRB. Nunn approached Baxter's 942 Bar & Grill who gave $6,000 toward the event, while the Roberts' foundation, Addie's Army, gave $3,000 for expenses, the outlet reported.
But, little did they know that Nunn had other schemes up his sleeve.
According to WAVE3, police say that Nunn never contacted Aldean or planned the concert, and allegedly intended on pocketing all the cash. In January, Nunn was arrested and charged with two counts of theft by deception, the outlet reported.
Fortunately, the story has a happy ending.
After learning that the Roberts family was cheated, a local radio station Q103.1 teamed up with Baxter's to put together a real benefit concert for Addie. The event, which is scheduled for March 25, will feature a performance by country artist, Gary Allan, and all proceeds will go toward Addie's medical costs, WHAS11 reported.
But, there's more good news for Addie: Last week, an anonymous donor gave the family $3,000, according to WLKY.
"It was such a bad thing to happen, but so much good has come out of it," Angela Roberts told the outlet. "It's just amazing that someone would want to give their money to Addie, and to give back the same amount that we lost."
