How Men Can Be Better Mentors For Women

How Men Can Be Better Mentors to Women

Entrepreneur Matt Mireles found out the hard way that, for men, professionally mentoring women presents a different set of challenges than mentoring men.

In “Subtle Things That Hold Women Back,” Mireles is approached by a woman who wants his thoughts on her growing online publishing business. Through a series of emails, the two attempt to set up a time and place to meet. But when Mireles suggests they meet at his place, the woman balks.

Theoretically, she was looking to avoid ending up in a situation that could turn less than professional, but it’s her gender-based wariness, Mireles asserts, that gets her in trouble. Mireles, swamped with professional obligations, suggests they stick to email, which he feels will be less helpful to her than an in-person meeting.
