Thanks to the wild success of "Mad Men," a number of television shows this season are working to copy its formula of stylized retro drama in an effort to capture the same sort of acclaim and fan dedication. Leading the pack are the controversial NBC drama, "The Playboy Club," and ABC's "Pan Am," two of the buzzier new fall shows.
And as hard as it will be to match up to Don Draper and company, they may be getting another major competitor, too.
Deadline reports that "Mildred Pierce" chief Todd Haynes is working with HBO to develop an adaptation of Sara Gran's novel "Dope," a "Mad Men"-style show about a woman addict-turned-private eye in the 1950s, which could star Julianne Moore. Given that network's prestige, if it happens, it may be the best chance TV has to replicating Matthew Weiner's runaway hit, with Moore being the biggest name, by far, in that contest: Christina Ricci leads "Pan Am," while Amber Heard and Eddie Cibrian head up "The Playboy Club."
Moore has a good recent history with HBO, as she's starring as Sarah Palin in "Game Change," the upcoming telefilm about the 2008 election. HBO already has a private eye show in "Bored to Death," though it's quite a bit different, with Jason Schwartzman starring as a stoner author who takes cases off of Craigslist.
Moore most recently starred in the romantic comedy, "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and will next appear in "Another Bullshit Night In Suck City."
