Monday night's highly anticipated episode of the "The Daily Show" gave complete coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden, with Jon Stewart all but dancing with delight at the demise of the 9/11 plotter.
Stewart remembered, as we all do, what he was doing when he found out about President Obama's announcement Sunday night. While watching "Celebrity Apprentice," Stewart figured Obama was merely interrupting to dole out more jokes about Donald Trump that he forgot to say at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Either that, or...
"As Hollywood has taught us, when a black president interrupts your show, a meteor is headed for the earth," Stewart joked.
But soon enough, Stewart and the world found out what the announcement really was: that a Navy Seal operation had shot and killed Osama bin Laden in Abottabad, Pakistan. Stewart was elated, but not for the reason you might think:
"What?! Not only did we kill Bin Laden, we killed him in Abottabad!" Stewart said. "Abottabad sounds like name most New Yorkers would have invented for the fictional place they would have loved to kill Bin Laden."
While Stewart was none too thrilled about bin Laden being buried at sea so quickly ("You just threw him off a boat? Shark-infested waters, anything?") he couldn't hide his excitement at the idea of the terrorist coming to his demise. He did admit that he could show some more ambivalence about the killing of a human being, but defended his excitement nonetheless:
"I am way too close to this whole episode to be rational about this," Stewart said. "Last night was a good night - not just for New York or D.C. - but for human people."
Stewart addressed the pundits who warned against short-term terrorism threats in the wake of bin Laden's demise, but still wrote the operation off as a complete success, declaring that "Al Qaeda's opportunity is gone." For 10 years, their desperate acts got the world's attention, and bin Laden was the face of that terror. But now, Stewart says, the face of the middle east is the young people in Egypt, Tunisia and other countries where revolutions are happening. He didn't express any fear about future Al Qaeda attacks, and even tied a catch phrase to the historic event:
"They have nothing. Can they still do damage? I'm sure. But we're back baby!"
