Car Crashes Into Manny's Deli, Breaking Window, Then Drives Away

Car Crashes Into Iconic Deli, Smashes Window, Drives Away

A delivery truck pulled up to Manny's Deli, the iconic South Loop restaurant, early Saturday morning to discover shattered glass, crushed brick and a four foot-by-six foot hole in the side of the building.

Police who investigated the scene say a car apparently drove into the building, then fled the scene, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Officers found "debris that resembled auto parts" among the glass shards, but didn't find a heavily damaged vehicle in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene. But based on the taillight they found, police believe the vehicle was a white 1990s Chrysler Concorde or Cirrus, according to CBS.

No one was in custody for the accident early Monday.

Kenneth Raskin, the owner of Manny's, told the Chicago Sun-Times that the crash could have been much worse. The window that broke was apparently a safe distance from the food, cafeteria and cash registers.

As such, the restaurant, which is both a popular tourist attraction and a well-known destination for politicians and other high-profile Chicagoans, is expected to open for business as usual on Monday.
