Hesher is not a role model. But amidst the chaos he creates, he may just save young TJ's life.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in the upcoming indie drama "Hesher," taking on the titular role, a nihilistic metalhead who doesn't take no for an answer -- because he doesn't bother asking permission. When he meets TJ, he finds a confused kid scarred by his mother's death, school bullying and his emotionally wrecked father (Rainn Wilson).
Whether the lessons Hesher teaches TJ are healthy or not is up for debate, but what's certain is that he fundamentally changes his life. When Nicole, a local sales clerk played by Natalie Portman, comes along, the drama only increases, bringing trust and betrayal into an already combustible mix.
The indie acts as a nice balance for Gordon-Levitt, who starred in last year's big budget "Inception" and will take on a role in the upcoming "Batman" blockbuster. Portman won the Oscar for her turn in indie drama "Black Swan," but similarly will be in two big studio films, this weekend's "Your Highness" and this summer's "Thor."WATCH:
