Street art has been trying for years to distance itself from more traditional art forms. Combative, secretive, and sometimes illegal, the works might not always admit that they inherit techniques and attitudes from earlier artists. But just like with any movement, the development of street art has been a story of gurus, agitators, and their followers. Richard Hambleton is one of those gurus, who, with the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, erected the scaffolding for some of today's most popular street artists. Hambleton will be showing 45 works, 25 never before seen, at The Dairy, London, from November 18 to December 3. And even if they have to come in disguise, the younger generation of artists will probably show up, too.
