In recent months Ava DuVernay has been quite outspoken on the parallels between the 1965 Selma voting rights marches and today’s social issues.
In continuing to share her thoughts, the “Selma” director sat down with Revolt for a 30 minute TV special earlier this month in light of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday to open up on an array of topics including her perspective on the Department of Justice’s damning report exposing racial discrimination on behalf of Ferguson, Missouri’s police department.
“The report is tangible evidence of what black people have been baring witness to for quite some time, not just in Ferguson but around the country in regards to police aggression,” she said during the interview.
“And the non-indictments and the continual refusal to prosecute police officers who do wrong is also speaking very loudly. And so the two of those together, along with pressure, become tools for freedom fighters and activists to move this conversation forward.”
DuVernay, who has received much praise for her directorial work, also gives viewers an inside glimpse on some of her own personal heroes, her relationship with Oprah Winfrey and how the success of "Selma" has helped to shape her future.
