High School Students Give Back Through Bank Of America's Student Leaders Project

On July 18, 230 bright-eyed high school juniors and seniors with a knack for giving back will gather in Washington, D.C., as part of a Student Leadership Summit. These students, chosen by Bank of America from overachievers in both the U.S. and U.K. for their Student Leaders program, will then be set loose across their communities -- spending the next eight weeks completing paid internships with nonprofit organizations.

Bank of America has initiated several philanthropic programs in recent years. In May 2004, BofA began the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, a wide-ranging effort to recognize and encourage nonprofit work by communities, companies and individuals. They have since spent over $110 million across the U.S. with their three primary outreach programs: Neighborhood Builders, Local Heroes and Student Leaders.

The goal of the Student Leaders project -- according to Kerry Sullivan, the president of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation -- is to promote an early passion for giving back in the hopes that new generations will be able to gain the experience to better themselves and their communities.

"[It] initiates a ripple effect that leads to higher levels of civic service, a greater understanding of how nonprofits work and additional positive impact in the communities we serve."
