Oprah: Won't You Hire Me?

By all accounts, Oprah Winfrey made a magnanimous gesture by handing out iPads and $10,000 checks to all the employees of her O Magazine. In today's climate of high unemployment and even higher job insecurity, the news spread so fast that you would have thought Congress had extended the federal subsidy for COBRA or coughed up more than $25 a week for the 7 million people who have lost their jobs. Oh wait; they canceled that too.

Today, many of us live in the Land of Gigs, where people string together freelance and part-time work opportunities that at the end of the month allows them to maybe pay most of their bills on time. The Gigvillers have given up sending their resumes into the dark hole, where nobody so much as acknowledges their receipt, let alone calls them seeking an interview.

COBRA is running out. Unemployment is running out. Patience with Washington is running out. It feels lonely out here without the protection of a corporate umbrella.

And against this backdrop comes the news that a boss thinks it's only right to share her wealth and success with the employees that helped create it. Call her a publicity-mongering celebrity if you want; I worship the woman and am ready to erect statues in her honor.

But I have one challenge for Oprah: Next time, can you take some of the bonus money and use it to create a few more jobs? Someone needs to get the ball rolling and my money is on you.
