How to Overcome the Need to Be Liked

Do you ever feel stuck in your life because you want to do something new, but are afraid of how others will perceive you?

I have a client who is eager to change her career path, but she feels that if she does, the people she works with in her current industry will think less of her. She believes they will think she failed in her current career and that she is not good enough to do what she wants to do now.

I have another client who has trouble marketing her business because she is worried about what those who are currently doing better than her in that field will think of her.

So what have these two women done? Nothing.

They are stuck in situations they don't like because the fear of not being liked by others is controlling their lives.

Have you ever found yourself fearing not being liked by others?

Every time I publish a blog post online, I know that some people will like what I write, and others will not. When I do public speaking, some people might love what I'm saying, while others may not relate to my stories or even my accent!

I can't control what others think about me. I can only control what I choose to believe about myself.

When we are able to love ourselves unconditionally and accept ourselves just the way we are, it does not matter if other people love us or hate us, like us or dislike us.

What matters is how we feel within ourselves.

Here it is in a nutshell:

1. You will never be liked by everyone, so just get over it.

No matter what you do, or how much you try to please others and be accepted in this world of polarity -- of "good" and "bad" -- you will never be liked by everyone. So why not just accept it as it is, instead of fighting against the current?

Just keep moving forward, with an open heart and good intentions. The ones who are meant to be a part of your life will be there. The ones who are not meant to support you will leave... and there is nothing wrong with that.

You can't be liked by everyone, but you can choose to love, accept and forgive yourself just the way you are.

2. You don't have, and will never have, control over what others think of you. But you can take charge of what you think about yourself.

It is up to you to love yourself no matter what happens on the outside. This is what empowering your life means: to bring it all back to yourself, always.

So today, I want to leave you with this affirmation:

When someone gets mad at you for not doing exactly what they want or expect you to do, or when fear creeps in, and you start reaching out to it instead of following your real bliss, say this:

"I love and accept myself just the way I am."
