Has there been a cinematic moment more dissected and analyzed than the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 Psycho, where actress Janet Leigh's screams are heard as we watch the water turn bloody? Having seen it as a child, I remain deeply terrified - so much so that I can't bring myself to even go see the real house in Beverly Hills that Leigh lived in for 30-plus years before her death. I would expect Tony Perkins to pop out of nowhere, although I'm cognizant of the fact that it would more likely just be listing agent Brooke Kaufman of Hilton & Hyland telling me that the price is $3,395,000. Chilling, simply chilling.
The house, built in 1976 and looking pretty much the same as it did on the day the last original carpenter left, has 4,432 square feet, a pool and lighted tennis court. There are four bedrooms and five bathrooms. I didn't ask which ones had showers in them. Can't go there.
Actress Leigh appeared in more than 50 movies, but was best-remembered for the 45 minutes that she was on screen in Psycho. Despite getting killed off early in the film, she was nominated for an Academy Award and received a Golden Globe for her role as Marion Crane, the secretary stabbed at the Bates Motel.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is her daughter. Leigh died about six years ago. Her husband, Robert Brandt, died last year and the home is being sold by his estate.
Speaking of crazy scary ...
One of my favorite no-longer-on-the-air shows is the HBO drama series Six Feet Under. And one of my favorite largely-out-of-his-mind characters on it was Billy Chenowith. The actor who played Billy, Jeremy M. Sisto, has listed his Hollywood home for $1.3 million.
Sisto bought the property in November 2002 for $938,000, so we may be seeing some irrational exuberance here. Then again, it might be a really nifty remodel.
The home has 1,800 square feet and was built in 1951.
Sisto more recently has starred as Detective Lupo on the NBC legal drama Law and Order. But he'll always be Brenda's crazy brother Billy to me.
Bruno Acalinas of Keller Williams Realty is the listing agent.
