The bizarre incident took place after Grzegorz Tomaszewski, a Polish priest, was involved in a car accident on the A9 at Villeneuve.

Central European News wrote in a caption:

A Polish priest has had his driving license confiscated by officials in Switzerland after he crashed his car and then set off down the motorway on foot heading back the way he had come.

Father Grzegorz Tomaszewski, 41, claimed he was looking for a petrol station where he could make a phone call to report the accident as he had no telephone. But police said his stroll down the middle of the busy A9 could have proved fatal as cars swerved to avoid hitting him.

Swiss driver Udo Maiers, 39, told local media: "He was carrying a rosary in his hands, and didn't seem to have a care in the world. Who knows, maybe it helped him because he certainly took a few risks wandering down the road as he did. He left the road eventually after he spotted a vineyard and he went in there where I understand he was found by the police."

Another woman driver said that when she called the police and told them there was a priest carrying a rosary walking down the middle of the motorway, they had not believed her at first.

Police confirmed that he had been involved an accident on the A9 at Villeneuve, and that the priest had first of all started going in one direction, but then had seemed to get annoyed and had thrown a scarf he had on the floor before turning round and heading back the other way. In total he had probably walked about a mile before he left the road.

Not much else is known about this strange incident.
