City Pays $98,000 To Critical Mass Cyclists

The city has agreed to pay $98,000 to five cyclists who took part in the Critical Mass bike ride in March 2007. The cyclists had filed a lawsuit claiming harassment by the NYPD, as well as unlawful detainment and arrest.

Critical Mass is a monthly event in which dozens of cyclists ride together through city streets.

The arresting officer seen in the footage below is Sgt. Timothy Horohoe, and though he was reprimanded, he never faced criminal charges. Another recent clash between the NYPD and Critical Mass cyclists in 2008 resulted in charges being filed against Officer Patrick Pogan for misdemeanor assault and filing a false report.

This is hardly the first time Critical Mass and the NYPD have clashed, and it is unlikely to be the last.
