Prosecutors in Massachusetts say that the body of a child discovered along a highway Friday matches the height and weight of a boy who went missing last September.
Jeremiah Oliver, 5, was last seen Sept. 14. His mother and her boyfriend were charged in his disappearance in December. Elsa Oliver is accused of abusing her missing son and her young daughter. The suspects have refused to discuss the missing boy's whereabouts with police.
"Right now we're treating this as a very serious crime, actually a potential homicide," Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early told NECN following the arrests.
The body of a child was found wrapped in a blanket inside a duffel bag about 40 feet off Interstate 190 in Sterling, prosecutors told CBS Boston. A medical examiner's report will determine whether the body in fact belongs to the missing preschooler, who is 3 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 40 lbs when he disappeared.
Prosecutors would neither say how they came to discover the body, not discuss its condition, although Early said the death "appeared to be a homicide."
Jose Oliver, the boy's biological father, told the Boston Globe that he will be brought to Boston on Saturday to help medical examiners identify the body.
