A "Chicago Fire" star tested out his rescue skills after getting stuck in an elevator Sunday.
Jesse Spencer, who plays Lt. Matt Casey on NBC's popular show based in Chicago, was on a tour of the Illinois State Capitol building with his family when he found himself in a scene better suited for his hit show.
"We piled into this elevator with about 30 other people. We thought we went up about three floors and then the elevator jolted and we got stuck. We were stuck in between floors," Spencer told the Chicago Sun-Times. "Admin wouldn't call the fire department, they wanted to call the elevator mechanic, but we didn't know how long we would be there. People started to freak out."
With no cell-phone reception and people starting to panic, Spencer sprung into action and muscled the elevator doors open to let in some air. "Once we got the doors opened it relieved the tension," Spencer said. "I took turns getting people that were freaking out over near the door. I didn’t want them sticking their heads out in case the elevator took off again.”
One woman was finally able to call the real fire department, which showed up about an hour later.
While some actors like to take their work home with them, Spencer joked he might have been pressured into saving the day. "I was wearing a fire hat, so people thought I was a fireman. That's why I had to do something," he said.
Firehouse 51 would be proud.
