Powerful New #FreeAJStaff Video Imagines A World Without A Free Press

Journalists Speak Out In New #FreeAJStaff Video

Journalists are speaking out again on behalf of the Al Jazeera journalists detained in Egypt in a new Youtube video.

CNN's Christiane Amanpour and four other journalists are featured in the video, talking about what the world would be like without a free press. "Imagine being kept in the dark about major global events," Amanpour said. The video includes a powerful visual of the tank in front of the Tiananmen Square protester fading away — a metaphor for what happens without the spotlight that journalism brings.

The video is the latest release from the #FreeAJstaff campaign. Scores of journalists have gotten involved in the campaign, which demands the release of three Al Jazeera journalists currently being held in Egypt. Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were arrested by Egyptian authorities at the end of December, and remain in custody. The United Nations, along with Al Jazeera and journalists, has criticized their detention.
