Avatar's environmental message parallels reality more closely than we thought. According to a CBC report, the film's supervising art director closely researched one environmental disaster area in particular: the Alberta tar sands.

Environmentalists are playing off this connection to fuel an attack against the oilsands development. A $20,000 ad in the Daily Variety, a show business trade publication, characterizes Alberta's oilsands as an eco-disaster comparable to that in Avatar, CBC reported. The ad reads "Canada's Avatar sands," and it's signed by 50 eco-groups.

The Alberta group was taken aback by the pointed Avatar attack, considering the comparison to be a flimsy one. However others insist that the visual similarities between the Avatar world and Alberta's tar sands are unmistakable, CBC reported.
