The award for strangest injury so far during spring training goes to... Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy!

The 32-year-old was scratched from his first scheduled exhibition start against the Pirates on Monday after he cut his index finger with a fishing knife at his home over the weekend. Fortunately for Peavy and the Red Sox, the cut was on his non-throwing hand. Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Peavy underwent a procedure on Sunday, per ESPN Boston.

"This was a freak one," Farrell said before talking about how it could have been worse, via Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Honestly, he avoided some serious injury with what took place. He was trying to cut through something and when it gave way, it almost cut through his left index finger."

Of course, spring training is when "freak" injuries tend to happen. Just check out Jayson Stark's list of weird spring training injuries that happened last year.

UPDATE: Well, Peavy's bizarre injury may have already been topped by Angels first baseman Ian Stewart.
