When renovating a home, it's important to fix problem areas while accentuating original structures that make the home unique. Basically, there's no need to move walls or complete a total gut job in order to get the look and feel you want. And no one knows that better than interior designer Michael S. Smith (yes, the same Smith that the Obamas hired for the White House),who remodeled this Majorca home with good ol' fashion decor.
Featured in Architectural Digest, this gorgeous abode has stunning views, a great floor plan and intricate details. But for Smith's clients, this wasn't enough to make the space feel like a real home. "There was no patina or sense of permanence, and it was missing the layered, unifying aesthetic that makes a house a home," Smith said.
So, he did was he does best: decorated. With coats of paint, new furniture, fantastic tiling and cool lighting, he completely transformed the home. Perhaps the most impressive space is the main entry, where he used Venetian-plaster trompe l’oeil treatment. With that, the space feels bigger and better than one would think. “It’s the first room people encounter, so it sets the tone,” Smith said.
