In 2001, Jack Somoano let "The Oprah Winfrey Show" cameras into his home to show the world what it's like to be a stay-at-home father to quintuplets Cody, Dante, Evan, Alyssa and Brianna. While his wife, Kathy, went to work as the general manager at a car rental agency, Jack took care of five 1-year-olds on his own. "I have a whole new appreciation for women staying home with their kids," Jack said on the show. "The men take it for granted, really and truly."
Jack's most memorable quality was his sensitivity -- but being a stay-at-home dad, he says, made him a little too sensitive. "I told my wife, you know what, I need to get out and do guy things with my friends because I really feel I'm becoming a woman," he said. "I get excited about detergent, things that take stains out. I cry on commercials. You know, it's crazy!"
Eleven years later, "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" followed up with Jack in 2012 to see how life has changed since the family's television debut.
In the above video, Jack says he struggled to find his identity in the years following his "Oprah" appearance. "I became the quint's dad everywhere I went, and I was no longer Jack -- I kind of lost my name, who I was," he says. "I kind of let go of myself and actually gained probably about 50 pounds."
As the kids got older, Jack says he had a turning point. "When the kids were 7 years old, it started getting easier for me to let go and understand that I don't need to be home all the time," he says.
"I decided that I needed to make a change for my health. So I started to lose weight and realized I had a passion for helping people -- so what a better career to choose than to actually become a personal fitness trainer? I make sure that I work around the kids, so I still take them to their baseball practices. I can still be home to make dinner and help them with their homework and things of that nature."
Also in the video, Jack gives an update on all five children, now in middle school, and describes each of their distinct personalities. "We're very fortunate with all our kids, and we couldn't ask for anything more," Jack says.
