Some students at Capital University will be living in an indoor water park resort, rather than a dorm, after the private Columbus, Ohio-based institution ran out of room in campus residence halls.
Capital hopes to get students situated in regular housing within the first two to three weeks of the semester, Nichole Johnson, director of media relations and communications, told The Huffington Post.
For now, they'll be living at the Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark Resort, which has several suites similar in size to the suite- and apartment-style living in university residence halls, Johnson said. It is about 5 miles from campus.
"Our goal is to make [sure] students' stay at Fort Rapids will be short and fun," Johnson said.
Students will be living in a water park resort, which has a restaurant, bar, gift shop, arcade and Old Tyme Photography booth. There are also waterslides, a lazy river and an adults-only hot tubs.
Interest in living on campus at the university, which has about 3,550 students, has reached an "an all-time high," leaving 30 students without a dorm at the moment, Johnson said.
"This is a relatively new phenomenon for us," she said. "Our work to create a great campus living experience has paid off. So, we looked at our options, including adding beds to existing spaces, or converting student lounges or storage spaces. But in the end, we didn’t feel like those solutions served students well."
Classes start Aug. 26. Students will find out next week if they are one of the lucky few to temporarily live in the resort, WBNS reports.
The university is placing several employees at the resort as well to make it more like a residence hall, and will provide shuttle services to and from campus throughout the day.
