A Chicago teen was shot seven times following an award ceremony and championship game for a summer basketball league late Wednesday.
The family of 16-year-old Leroy Bryant told ABC Chicago the teen was caught in gang crossfire when a gunman came out of an alley and opened fire around 11:30 p.m. near 71st and King Drive in the Park Manor neighborhood.
"Right now he's doing well, he's in recovery. He lost a kidney. The bullet traveled to his lungs but his lungs are okay," said Tequila Robinson, Bryant's mother.
A 15-year-old girl and a 49-year-old man were also shot during the incident. The Tribune reports the girl was shot in the leg and taken to Comer Children's Hospital, while the man was treated for a gunshot wound to the groin.
The two teens and man hurt in the Park Manor shooting were among the seven wounded in various shooting incidents citywide Wednesday night, the Sun-Times reports.
Police are still searching for suspects from Wednesday's shootings. Park officials told ABC the basketball event had ended at 7:30 p.m., hours before the shooting. Robinson, meanwhile, lamented that teens like her son who try to avoid gang violence still wind up getting hurt.
"My son is a very good young man," Robinson said. "I mean, during the daytime, he is at Hirsch Metropolitan practicing football and after 12 p.m. in the afternoon he is at the park district to keep himself away from the gangs and this happens to him coming home."
"Hopefully whoever it is gets caught and understands this is serious," Robinson told the Tribune. "It’s not a game, it’s not a joke, it’s my son."
