Chicago Weather: Thunderstorms, Cool Temperatures Ahead In Weekend Forecast

Thunderstorms, Massive Cooldown Ahead Friday

It's shaping up to be a wet, stormy Friday, Chicago.

According to the National Weather Service, rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin sometime after 1 p.m. and before 7 p.m. in the Chicago area and continue overnight, NBC Chicago reports.

AccuWeather reports the most intense of the storms could bring wind gusts up to 50 mph as well as hail and periods of heavy rain, making for conditions that could make for a dangerous rush hour commute Friday afternoon.

The weather is not expected to be severe, though minor tree damage and power outages are possible.

The stormy weather has a cold front arriving in the area to thank. According to WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling, the front could make for the coolest July weekend Chicago has seen in 28 years as highs may not even reach 70 degrees on Saturday. The high on Sunday is forecast to only be 72 degrees as well.

Warmer, more seasonable temperatures are expected to return to the Chicago area next week.
