Chicago Flooding: Thousands Without Power After Severe Storms Hit Area

Thousands Without Power After Storms Slam Chicago Area

Thousands in the Chicago area were left without power Wednesday morning after a powerful storm system hit late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

While the storm was not as powerful as the system that left large swaths of Chicagoland underwater last month, the storm still managed to bring flash flooding to some underpasses on Chicago's South Side as well as in suburbs including Berwyn, Burr Ridge and Bolingbrook, according to the Chicago Tribune.

At the storm's height, between one and two inches of rain were falling within an hour and winds gusted up to 60 mph, NBC Chicago reports.

According to CBS Chicago, about 21,000 ComEd customers were left without power when the storm was at its worst, but by 6 a.m., that number was down to about 5,000.

The Chicago area isn't done with rainy weather yet. According to the Chicago Weather Center blog, "additional thundery downpours" are due in the coming days totaling an expected several additional inches in the days ahead while temperatures surge well into the 80s.
