'Modern Family' Finale: Phil's Mom Tries To Help Her Husband From Beyond The Grave (VIDEO)

'Modern Family' Finale: The Funeral Of Phil's Mom

Proving that Phil's unusual way of looking at the world is at least partially a product of his environment, his late mother's voice rang out in beautifully odd fashion on the season finale of "Modern Family." The family headed to Florida after she had passed away, where she left notes and gifts for the various members of the family.

Her rather unusual request for Phil was to set her husband up with one of their neighbors in the retirement community. She rather rightfully knew that he would be overwhelmed by the attention he'd get from all the single older women there. And so, after some initial reluctance, Phil went and talked to the woman. If nothing else, he was going to fulfill her request.

Phil laid it all out for the woman, who admitted that she didn't know what to say. "Really? This is such a normal request I’m making," he said with a small smile. "She was always doing crazy stuff like this. Going out of her way to take care of us.”

As Phil broke down talking about how his mother cared so much about her family, the woman offered him comfort. It was a perfectly awkward and sweet exchange that Zap2It thought Ty Burrell captured perfectly. "Burrell masterfully conveys the sadness and loss Phil has been going through, and it's here that the audience begins to care about a woman they've never known.”

The AV Club wrote that "Modern Family" hasn't been great all season, but this was one of their stronger outings. "When it’s good, as this fleet, funny, and sweet finale shows, there are few comedies on television more satisfying," they said.
