According to the Associated Press, ticket purchases in California have helped fuel the surge in the jackpot. California has sold $83 million worth of Powerball tickets since April, accounting for 11 percent of the game's sales in that time period. California began offering Powerball in April, joining 42 other states, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.
The previous Powerball jackpot record was set in November 2012, when two winning tickets split a prize of $587.5 million.
The last major Powerball grand prize of $338 million was won in March by a former bodega owner from New Jersey. In addition to settling child support payments, Pedro Quezada announced he would pay his neighbors' rents with his winnings "for at least a month," a friend said.
The odds of winning the Powerball lottery jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.
