Kimani Gray Lawsuit: Parents To Sue NYC Over Fatal NYPD Shooting Of 16-Year-Old Teen

Parents Of 16-Year-Old Fatally Shot By NYPD To Sue

The parents of Kimani Gray, the 16-year-old boy shot and killed by NYPD officers in March, are planning to file a wrongful-death lawsuit against New York City.

The Daily News reports Carol and Geraud Gray claim officers used excessive force in the fatal shooting, and that their son didn't receive medical attention quickly enough.

"We have a videotape that shows all these police personnel who pretty much militarized the block,” the family's attorney Kenneth Montgomery said. “And this young man is on the pavement, perceived not to be getting any medical attention for up to 15 minutes.”

On March 9, Gray was shot by two plainclothes officers who since the shooting, allege the teenager pulled a gun as they approached him outside a friend's house in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

However, witnesses and family members deny Gray was carrying a weapon.

His death sparked a wave of sometimes violent protests throughout the neighborhood. Demonstrators condemned the NYPD's use of stop and frisks and other aggressive police tactics.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly attempted to contact the mother and offer his condolences, but Montgomery said the family was not interested in the mayor's "photo-op."
