Hyde Park Shooting: Henry Atkins Shot Dead, 4 Others Hurt In Chicago Gun Violence

1 Killed, 1 Wounded In Hyde Park Shooting

One man was killed and another wounded early Tuesday in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.

Henry Atkins, 39, was standing in the hallway of an apartment building with a 21-year-old man in the 5200 block of South Harper Street just after midnight when a third man approached them, ABC Chicago reports.

The gunman opened fire, striking Atkins in the chest. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to NBC Chicago. The younger man was hit in the hand and taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment.

Luis Galvan, the 21-year-old who survived the shooting, told WGN that neither he nor Atkins knew the gunman, though he recognized him from the neighborhood. He told the station he is cooperating with police amid their ongoing investigation.

"I basically saw my life before my eyes," Galvan told reporters Tuesday morning after being released from the hospital.

The Tuesday shooting is the second recent incident of fatal gun violence within a half mile of President Barack Obama's Chicago home -- in the nearby Kenwood neighborhood. A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot nearby last week.

In addition to the Hyde Park shooting, three other people were wounded in overnight shootings in Chicago, including a 25-year-old man shot in the foot in the city's Rogers Park neighborhood and a 28-year-old man struck in the shoulder in West Englewood, DNAinfo Chicago reports.
