Rick Perry On Gay Marriage: 'It Is Fairly Clear' Where Texas Stands On The Issue

Rick Perry Weighs In On Gay Marriage

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) weighed in on the issue of same-sex marriage Tuesday, saying "it is fairly clear about where this state stands on that issue."

Perry's remark referenced the two gay marriage cases being heard by the Supreme Court this week, the Dallas Morning News reports.

“The people of the state of Texas, myself included, believe marriage is between one man and one woman,” Perry said.

The Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments on two major gay marriage cases this week -- Hollingsworth v. Perry, the case involving California's Proposition 8, and United States v. Windsor, which questions the Defense of Marriage Act.

In December 2011, Perry released an ad voicing his opposition to gay marriage as part of his efforts to nab the Republican presidential nomination. In the ad, called "Strong," Perry claims President Barack Obama is waging a "war on religion" after signing legislation allowing gays to serve in the military.
