A stray dog found wandering alone in Afghanistan has become a hero after he used his nose to save two soldiers from a Taliban bomb.

Brin, a mixed-breed Afghan dog, is one of six heroic canines featured at Crufts 2013, a UK dog show taking place March 7-10. In 2010, British soldiers found him near a base in Helmand and adopted him, unaware that one day, he'd save two of their lives.

According to the Telegraph, the abandoned dog showed a talent for sniffing out danger, and soldiers started to bring him along on patrol.

One night, Brin started barking on the side of a road near Lashkar Gar, alerting two soldiers to a hidden bomb that could have killed them, the Telegraph reported.

Later, the Taliban seized the dog for an unspecified amount of time. He survived, but the British army got him back just as they were set to move locations, which would have required -- per Army procedure -- putting the dog down, the Sun reported.

A teacher named Sally Baldwin, however, read Brin's story on Facebook and fought to save his life -- eventually bringing him home to England.

According to the Sussex Express, Baldwin, who lives in Hailsham, East Sussex, sold her car and raised £4,000 to adopt the dog.

"I think the fact that the Taliban didn't kill him is an amazing stroke of luck," Baldwin told the Daily Mail. She has owned more than 10 shelter dogs in her life.

The Crufts competition honors dogs for bravery, support or companionship. A live audience will vote on a winning dog, whose owner receives a £1,500 donation to the charity of his or her choice.
