Alex Smith may be starting Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season. It just won't likely be for the San Francisco 49ers.

After losing his job to Colin Kaepernick during the 2012 season, Smith is reportedly close to being dealt another team. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Sunday that a deal for the former No. 1 overall draft pick was being described as "effectively complete" by the 49ers.

While La Canfora did not specify a destination for Smith, Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com wrote that talk of Smith being shipped to the Kansas City Chiefs was unavoidable at the NFL Combine

"Everywhere I go in Indianapolis, I hear someone say the Alex Smith-to-Kansas City Chiefs deal is all but done," wrote Rosenthal on Sunday.

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell indicated that the team in the trade talks was "not us" in a text message to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

A few days earlier, Jason Cole of Yahoo! named the Chiefs and Cardinals as the likeliest landing spots for Smith, who lost his job after being sidelined with a concussion. Smith piloted the 49ers to the NFC Championship after the 2011 season and helped the team to a 6-2 start to the 2012 campaign.
