Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) doesn't have a singing voice and he's not ashamed to show it. Either that, or he just knows that publicly embarrassing yourself is a great way to make an auditorium full of high school students laugh.
Speaking to students this week at his alma mater -- R.B. Stall High School in Charleston, S.C. -- Scott sang a line from the 1970's song, "Children Hold On To Your Dreams" by soul singer William "Wee Gee" Howard. A murmur spread through the crowd as Scott entered a falsetto easily a few octaves above his natural baritone. The senator stopped after a few words, joining the crowd in laughing at the painful performance before reciting the rest of the lyrics in his speaking voice. His message: Dream big.
It's unlikely that Scott's vocal stylings will elicit the same sort of response that President Barack Obama got for his impromptu rendition of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" in 2012, but the Republican's move seemed like appropriate stagecraft for the venue.
Scott served as a congressman before being appointed to the Senate earlier this year to replace outgoing Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), becoming the state's first black senator.
