'GMA' Ratings Spike With Robin Roberts Return

Robin Roberts' return to "Good Morning America" brought the ABC morning show a major spike in total viewers.

Roberts returned to the ABC morning show on Wednesday for the first time since she took medical leave in late August. She underwent treatment for the rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS, which kept her away from the studio for more than five months.

Her emotionally-charged return was not only a happy reunion for Roberts and her ABC News colleagues, it was also another significant moment in the never-ending morning show ratings war. "GMA" broke the "Today" show's 16-year winning streak last year while Roberts was on the air, and kept its lead over its NBC rival while Roberts was away.

According to preliminary ratings numbers obtained by TVNewser, "GMA" brought in a total of 6.1 million viewers, making Wednesday the morning show's most watched program since the morning after the 2012 presidential election. NBC rival "Today" countered Robin Roberts' return on Wednesday by airing a segment with ABC News partner Yahoo. CEO Marissa Mayer unveiled the new Yahoo.com. "Today" brought in a total of 4.933 million viewers.

The morning show rivals were neck and neck in the coveted A25-54 demographic, the category most important to advertisers.
