This Thursday, visitors to Detroit's Corktown neighborhood will have the opportunity to experience a pop-up bazaar designed especially for the lover in you.
Keeping with the notion that love can happen in the unlikeliest of places, the Valentine's Day Market (A.K.A. VLNTNSDYMRKT) will set up shop in an old gas station. It'll be located at Michigan Ave and 17th St. in Detroit -- just past Roosevelt Park and the oh-so-picturesque Michigan Central Station.
40 vendors will participate in Thursday's bazaar, including several Detroit-based enterprises like Midtown's City Bird shop and Pete's Chocolates. For those of you who think of this holiday as just a Hallmark marketing ploy, VLNTNSDYMRKT is an opportunity to surprise your sweetheart with a gift that's actually unique, while supporting local businesses in the city.
The pop-up is being hosted by Lisa Waud, the owner of a floral design studio based in Ann Arbor called Pot & Box.
"I have the idea it will be this curated group of vendors," she told the Huffington Post.
"I'll be there with flowers. We have 14 food vendors -- probably about half of those are sweets -- truffles and chocolates," she said. "I have a woman who makes handmade undies... There will be crocheted items, Detroit-themed T-shirts, vintage clothes, lots of letter-pressed cards and lots of jewelry."
The site of the pop-up market will eventually be home to a Detroit branch of Pot & Box. Waud said she chose the location, because she likes the idea of the industrial old gas station "freshened up" with flowers. Her Ann Arbor shop is set up in an old mill.
The Detroit store should open later this year after some renovations, but Waud said she's impatient to break in the new space and excited about Thursday.
"It's kind of one-stop shopping. We'll be eating and drinking and rocking out to music," she said. "The response has been awesome. It should be a great party."
The Valentine's Day Market pop will take place Thursday, Feb. 14 from noon to 7 p.m. at 2520 Michigan Ave. in Detroit. For a list of vendors, visit the VLNTNSDYMRKT Facebook page.
