'The Walking Dead': Season 3 Will Continue To Push The Evenlope

'Walking Dead' Fans: 'Buckle Up'

"The Walking Dead" Season 3 has a lot of twists, turns and "all kinds of awesome" ahead, according to comic series co-creator and TV show executive producer Robert Kirkman.

"We haven't seen Rick and the Governor face to face yet," Kirkman told EW. "That’s definitely coming. We’re going to see some pretty large scale confrontations between Woodbury and the prison. I mean, this is going to be a pretty explosive last half of the season and there’s going to be a lot of large-scale cool stuff that you might not expect to see in this show. We’re going to continue pushing the envelope and continue to do the unexpected. There’s a lot of crazy stuff ahead. So buckle up."

Kirkman made the press rounds after "The Suicide King," the midseason premiere of "The Walking Dead" Season 3, and teased what's ahead for the merry band of zombie apocalypse survivors.

The episode saw the Dixon brothers, Merle (Michael Rooker) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), reunite, beat the crap out of each other and then hit the road, breaking off from Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the prison gang and Woodbury.

"It'd be a disservice to have those guys off the table for too long," Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're definitely going to follow Daryl and Merle's journey and see the interaction between those two. We haven't really seen very much interaction between them aside from a vision in the second season. These are characters that have changed very much while they were away from each other. Now that they're back together, they're almost two completely different people."

Another relationship that has changed -- this one thanks to the Governor -- has been Glenn (Steve Yeun) and Maggie's (Lauren Cohan).

"Glenn's evolution and change has been jumpstarted by the Governor," Kirkman said. "We've seen him already be more confrontational than we have in the past, and that's going to continue and is going to creep into his relationship with Maggie. Coming out of their encounter in Woodbury, these two have a lot to deal with. Whether or not they're going to deal with it together or allow it to drive them apart, that's what we're going to find out."

The end of the "Walking Dead" midseason premiere saw Rick start to lose his marbles a little more. After hallucinating earlier in the year with phantom phone calls, Rick's mind went a step further and he started seeing his dead wife. Yep, Sarah Wayne Callies came back as Lori Grimes in a wedding dress, presumably the way Rick remembers her being the happiest.

Callies told EW her scene in "The Suicide King" went through many incarnations before they decided on the shadowed wedding dress appearance. "I remember at a certain point instead of the way that it happens in the episode, there was talk about Lori showing up as a zombie, but her being a hallucination," she told EW. "And then she and Rick would have a conversation about something. And I remember being pretty vocal about that. I was like, 'I think talking zombies is bad for the show.'"

"Hershel will see Rick hallucinating as a threat to the group’s survival and that pushes him into a leadership position, for sure. Glenn is now bent on getting revenge on The Governor, and he’s torn between loyalty for Rick and his own agenda, so he’s also vying for leadership," Mazzara said. "These are not dynamics that we’ve faced in the past, back when people were saying, 'Oh, what do we do? What do we do?' This is really the group fighting amongst themselves, their backs against the wall without options and feeling the pressure. Meanwhile, the Governor knows where they are, and he’s pissed off, and he’s coming for them. It’s going to be an exciting ride, I can promise you that."
