A former pediatric paramedic turned himself in on Tuesday after Coral Springs Police say he abused his infant son so severely, the child had to be airlifted to a nearby intensive care unit.
Police report that on July 23, fire rescue responded to a 911 call of an infant suffering seizures. Pediatric ICU staff found that the four-month-old was suffering from a skull fracture, extensive brain swelling, and hemorrhages in his eyes and head according to the complaint affidavit.
In his sworn statement, the father, Victor James Jadoo Jr., 36, of Fort Lauderdale, blamed the child’s extreme injuries on his two-year-old daughter, whom he said threw a plastic toy pig at the infant.
Police say doctors treating the infant determined that the multiple hemorrhages in the child’s eyes and head could not have been caused by a plastic toy thrown by a toddler.
Hospital staff believe that the infant’s injuries were the result of an abusive head injury, officials report, and exhibited signs of being violently shaken.
Police say the boy was also suffering from a rib fracture, which was reportedly found by the father and diagnosed at West Boca Medical Center when the child was one month old. The injury was never reported to the abuse hotline, according to police.
The Sun Sentinel reports that Jadoo worked in the West Boca’s emergency pediatric unit until he was let go in November.
The hospital did not immediately return HuffPost’s request for comment.
Jaddo was charged on two counts of child abuse and one count of child neglect for not delivering medical help in a timely manner. He posted his $16,500 bond on Wednesday and was released from jail.
